Documentary Review:History of the Bible

History of the Bible
Zion Reformed Church seminar held on 1/23/08. Pastor Matt gives a history of how we got the Bible.
Development
The Old Testament canon entered into Christian use in the Greek Septuagint translations and original books, and their differing lists of texts. In addition to the Septuagint, Christianity subsequently added various writings that would become the New Testament. Somewhat different lists of accepted works continued to develop in antiquity. In the 4th century a series of synods produced a list of texts equal to the 39-to-46-book canon of the Old Testament and to the 27-book canon of the New Testament that would be subsequently used to today, most notably the Synod of Hippo in AD 393. Also c. 400, Jerome produced a definitive Latin edition of the Bible (see Vulgate), the canon of which, at the insistence of the Pope, was in accord with the earlier Synods. With the benefit of hindsight it can be said that this process effectively set the New Testament canon, although there are examples of other canonical lists in use after this time. A definitive list did not come from an Ecumenical Council until the Council of Trent (1545–63)

Review:
It was fairly presented with guests ranging from the late Jerry Falwell to John Dominic Crossan (the Jesus Seminar fame). It is a comprehensive investigation into the authorship of the Bible. It presents a simplified and clearly explained view of the Documentary theory of the Pentateuch. It is not a propaganda on either the right or the left. It is vey informative and balanced.

Documentary Review:The Visual Bible: Acts

The Visual Bible: Acts
Language: English
DVD Release Date: April 8, 2005
Run Time: 183 minutes
Number of discs: 2
Rated: G (General Audience)
Writers: Joyce Marcarelli
Directors: Regardt van den Bergh
Producers: Robert Marcarelli
Storyline:
The accounts of the New Testament Book of Acts, dramatized and narrated, as recalled by old Dr. Luke.
Actors:
Henry O. Arnold, James Brolin, Dean Jones, Bruce Marchiano, Simone Newman
Review:

This 1994 word-for-word depiction from the New International Version Bible of The Book of Acts is a wonderful addition to any Christian film library; directed by Regardt Van Den Bergh, it uses historically accurate costuming, and has the feel of what it must have been like in the time of the apostles, in their journeys throughout the Mediterranean countries.
It makes a great Bible study tool, and can be used either just to watch, or if you have a NIV Bible, to read along as the chapters unfold; also useful are the chapter and verse numbers on the lower right hand corner of the screen when each verse changes.

Description
An epic in the spirit of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, this widely acclaimed motion picture is a meticulous recreation of the turbulent era of Jesus and the events that changed the course of history! Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor, AMERICAN TRAGEDY, 2000), it’s the bold and powerful story of Jesus as told by his disciple John. The best-loved but least understood of the gospels, John presents a uniquely human portrait of courage and passion encompassing Jesus' entire three-year ministry, the final years of his life. Intimate and reflective, THE GOSPEL OF JOHN offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the incomparable life and times of Jesus Christ.
Review:
This movie, based on one of the modern language versions of the Gospel of John is fairly accurate and nicley filmed. Christopher Plummer narrates and the actor portraying Jesus does a fine job. The strength of the movie is that while it is filmed on a limited budget, the director, Eric Till, is up to the task of trying to get everything he can out of the sets, sights, and people in the movie.

Review:
by joepizza (United States)
I've seen both the Passion and this movie. In the Passion, Jesus is joking with Mary about a table he had just built. It was a segment that warmed my heart, made me smile and pulled the GOD Jesus a bit closer to me , making it easier for me to touch. BUt that was about it as far a warmth. I absolutely was blown away by the Passion. After seeing THIS movie, I realized how the the Passion could, in fact, be a FAR FAR BETTER movie if it blended a bit more of THIS Jesus.
I shake my head because now I realize that THE PASSION could have an EVEN GREATER impact on my heart and emotions if THE Christ in the PASSION was portrayed a bit more like Bruces, Christ. I would have fallen in love with the Christ in the PASSION even MORE. Thus making the incredible suffering he endured even more shocking and regrettable.

Book Review:Hercule Poirot's Christmas - Christie_ Agatha

Book:Hercule Poirot's Christmas
Author: Agatha Christie

In this case Christie assembles a cast of suspects, gives them ample motive and opportunity, gives them all reasons to lie, throws in a group of clues that simply cannot be reconciled in any logical fashion, and then brings off a solution which explains everything and exposes a killer you'd never suspect.
The story (originally titled "Murder for Christmas") was written in 1938, the same year Christie wrote "Appointment with Death." The two stories share much in common. "Appointment" features a fabulously wealthy, tyrannical matriarch who delights in tormenting her children. "Christmas" features a fabulously wealthy, tyrannical patriarch who delights in tormenting his children. By the time the matriarch/patriarch is bumped off, the reader is ready help kill him/her. The children in both stories are all pathetic weaklings. Despite their weakness, the reader can develop affection for some of them.

Book Review:Hallowe'en Party - Christie_ Agatha

Book: Hallowe'en Party
Author: Agatha Christie

Even though "Hallowe'en Party" was written later in Agatha Christie's career, and some might believe it to be somewhat of a letdown from earlier works, it retains all the trademarks of what make Christie's intricately woven, delightfully detected mysteries so endearing and timeless. With Hercule Poirot serving as the sleuth who steps in to solve the murder, "Hallowe'en Party" is quick-paced and filled with a cast of characters who seemingly all have something to gain, or hide.
