Zion Reformed Church seminar held on 1/23/08. Pastor Matt gives a history of how we got the Bible.
Development
The Old Testament canon entered into Christian use in the Greek Septuagint translations and original books, and their differing lists of texts. In addition to the Septuagint, Christianity subsequently added various writings that would become the New Testament. Somewhat different lists of accepted works continued to develop in antiquity. In the 4th century a series of synods produced a list of texts equal to the 39-to-46-book canon of the Old Testament and to the 27-book canon of the New Testament that would be subsequently used to today, most notably the Synod of Hippo in AD 393. Also c. 400, Jerome produced a definitive Latin edition of the Bible (see Vulgate), the canon of which, at the insistence of the Pope, was in accord with the earlier Synods. With the benefit of hindsight it can be said that this process effectively set the New Testament canon, although there are examples of other canonical lists in use after this time. A definitive list did not come from an Ecumenical Council until the Council of Trent (1545–63)

Review:
It was fairly presented with guests ranging from the late Jerry Falwell to John Dominic Crossan (the Jesus Seminar fame). It is a comprehensive investigation into the authorship of the Bible. It presents a simplified and clearly explained view of the Documentary theory of the Pentateuch. It is not a propaganda on either the right or the left. It is vey informative and balanced.

Documentary Review:Who Wrote the Bible
Who Wrote the Bible
Country:UK
Language:English
Release Date:25 December 2004 (UK)
Genres:Documentary
Description:
Robert Beckford learned the Bible at his mother's knee and grew up believing that it was literally true.
But, 20 years on from his Baptist upbringing, Beckford is no longer so sure that 'the good book' is the pure, unadulterated word of God untouched by human hand.
For Beckford, who wrote the Bible matters more today than perhaps at any other moment in living memory.
His journey takes him from Birmingham to the West Bank, from Jerusalem to Turkey, and from Rome to Bible Belt America.
Review:But, 20 years on from his Baptist upbringing, Beckford is no longer so sure that 'the good book' is the pure, unadulterated word of God untouched by human hand.
For Beckford, who wrote the Bible matters more today than perhaps at any other moment in living memory.
His journey takes him from Birmingham to the West Bank, from Jerusalem to Turkey, and from Rome to Bible Belt America.
This 100+-minute documentary represents a quest by British theological scholar Robert Beckford to put the derivation and composition of the Bible into perspective for viewers of this Channel 4 (UK) presentation. He seeks to answer questions about how the books of the Bible were written, by whom, in what social and political context, and in what sequence. To what extent were they historically accurate? Were historical discrepancies material to their credibility and to Judeo-Christian traditions? Naturally, he starts with the first five books of the Old Testament, the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), all of which were supposedly written by Moses.

Review:
This 1994 word-for-word depiction from the New International Version Bible of The Book of Acts is a wonderful addition to any Christian film library; directed by Regardt Van Den Bergh, it uses historically accurate costuming, and has the feel of what it must have been like in the time of the apostles, in their journeys throughout the Mediterranean countries.
It makes a great Bible study tool, and can be used either just to watch, or if you have a NIV Bible, to read along as the chapters unfold; also useful are the chapter and verse numbers on the lower right hand corner of the screen when each verse changes.

Description
An epic in the spirit of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, this widely acclaimed motion picture is a meticulous recreation of the turbulent era of Jesus and the events that changed the course of history! Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Christopher Plummer (Best Supporting Actor, AMERICAN TRAGEDY, 2000), it’s the bold and powerful story of Jesus as told by his disciple John. The best-loved but least understood of the gospels, John presents a uniquely human portrait of courage and passion encompassing Jesus' entire three-year ministry, the final years of his life. Intimate and reflective, THE GOSPEL OF JOHN offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the incomparable life and times of Jesus Christ.
This movie, based on one of the modern language versions of the Gospel of John is fairly accurate and nicley filmed. Christopher Plummer narrates and the actor portraying Jesus does a fine job. The strength of the movie is that while it is filmed on a limited budget, the director, Eric Till, is up to the task of trying to get everything he can out of the sets, sights, and people in the movie.

Review:
by joepizza (United States)
I've seen both the Passion and this movie. In the Passion, Jesus is joking with Mary about a table he had just built. It was a segment that warmed my heart, made me smile and pulled the GOD Jesus a bit closer to me , making it easier for me to touch. BUt that was about it as far a warmth. I absolutely was blown away by the Passion. After seeing THIS movie, I realized how the the Passion could, in fact, be a FAR FAR BETTER movie if it blended a bit more of THIS Jesus.
I shake my head because now I realize that THE PASSION could have an EVEN GREATER impact on my heart and emotions if THE Christ in the PASSION was portrayed a bit more like Bruces, Christ. I would have fallen in love with the Christ in the PASSION even MORE. Thus making the incredible suffering he endured even more shocking and regrettable.

Over a thousand years ago, the sun-washed land of southern Spain was home to Jews, Christians, and Muslims, living together and flourishing. Their culture and beliefs intertwined, and the knowledge of the ancients was gathered and reborn. Here were the very seeds of the Renaissance. But this world too quickly vanished. Greed, fear, and intolerance swept it away. Puritanical judgments and absolutism snuffed out the light of learning. Within a few centuries, the fragile union of these people dissipated like smoke. The time of tolerance was lost, forever.

Documentary Review:When the Moors (Muslims) Ruled in Europe
Language: English
DVD Release Date: June 10, 2008
Run Time: 101 minutes
Actors: Bettany Hughes
Directors: Timothy Copestake
Description:
Join British historian Bettany Hughes as she examines a long-buried chapter of European history--the rise and fall of Islamic culture in what is now Spain and Portugal. Although generations of Spanish rulers have tried to expunge this era from the historical record, recent archaeology and scholarship now shed fresh light on the Moors who flourished in Al-Andalus for more than 700 years.
Bettany Hughes gives a decent, sometimes too politically correct overview of the influence of Islam on Medieval Spain. Ms. Hughes starts her journey with the conquest of the Visigoth Kingdom by the Moors coming from North Africa at the beginning of the 8th century C.E. She ends this journey with the fall of the Moorish Kingdom of Granada at the hands of the armies of the Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand at the end of the 15th century C.E. Ms. Hughes introduces her audience to the splendors of Moorish architecture in cities such as Grenada, Cordoba, and Toledo. Ms. Hughes rightly reminds viewers about the decisive but often-ignored contribution of Moorish Spain to the European Renaissance in domains such as medicine, mathematics, and astronomy. Italy is usually credited as the key driver for the European Renaissance. To her credit, Ms. Hughes emphasizes that the Christian Reconquista of Moorish Spain often was about gaining land, prestige, and wealth under a veneer of religious fervor. The Reconquista turned out to be a civil war rather than the black-and-white antagonism between Christianity and Islam that has carried the day in the popular imagination. Many inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula converted to Islam for a variety of reasons in the centuries following the arrival of the Moors. Ms. Hughes rightly compares the expulsion of many Muslims from Spain after 1492 C.E. with what is today understood as ethnic cleansing. Ms. Hughes is at her weakest when she almost completely ignores the important contribution of the Jewish community to the splendor of Moorish Spain. This lapse of judgment is somewhat surprising because Ms. Hughes rightly denounces again and again the selective interpretation that has been given to the contribution of Moorish Spain to this day.

FOR NON-MUSLIMS: You will find this production very informative and non-biased-as the main producers and creators of this production are three Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Americans (strange, but true). The guests who are interviewed also come from different faiths; so this production is not about a group of Muslims going on and on about how wonderful the prophet was. You will learn about how this religion got started, how did Muhammad become the prophet of Islam, and how did he lead Muslims around him and throughout centuries. The production mixes between past life of the prophet and how Muslims behave today. The universality of the production and interviews are very well presented.
FOR MUSLIMS: If you live or lived in a Muslim country and learned about Islam and the prophet since childhood, most likely, you won't find much to learn about the prophet that you didn't already know. However, the examples of Muslim Americans and what they're doing in their daily lives to live the Muslim way of life are truly inspiring and worth seeing. If it's for nothing else, it makes you proud of seeing some good Muslims who are just ordinary people.
The producers had a major challenge for not being allowed to show any illustrations or create any reenactments portraying Prophet Muhammad, who's the lead character, since that's not welcomed by Islam.
